A day in the life of a work experience student at FV

Today is my first day here at Future Visions, but before I came here on the train I was both anxious yet excited for what would be in store for me when I arrived.

As I entered the reception area for the main office, I was overwhelmed by a sense of professionalism in a beautifully modern building. When I had completed all of the boring admin tasks I was seated down waiting for the big boss to turn up.

After a few moments of anticipation I was greeted by a friendly face who introduced himself to me as Nathan Littleton. We then progressed into the office, which surprised me, as it was only him in the office. I was really shocked that the company office was so small; Nathan explained that a lot of people in the company work externally. So I was instantly shown to my desk and we began discussing what I was hoping to get out of this placement.

Within moments of talking to Nathan I felt instantly relaxed and comfortable in the environment he had created. The discussion then continued into what I knew and what interested me about the company. As the day continued I was given the list of jobs that I had to do, and was given all the support that I needed in completing the tasks which made my confidence increase tremendously as this is my first work experience placement in a business oriented company.

As I was completing my tasks the hours flew by and it was soon lunchtime! By this time it was time for a well earned break, so I escaped the office and ventured into the city of Birmingham. Being from the country side the city lifestyle is not something I am used to being in, but after a nice visit into Greggs I found a nice sunny spot on the grass happily eating my lunch whilst watching the busy city goers rushing around!

After a few moments of reflection from what had happened this morning I returned back to the office and carried on with my tasks. To my delight, Nathan had put the radio on which was a nice background to work to. I was also quite pleased that when I showed him the work I had done that he seemed impressed with my efforts, which put a seemingly endless grin on my face after receiving a nice compliment from my boss for the week.

Now as the day starts to wind down, and drawing towards the big 5 o’clock, I look back at the days work and think to myself “I am very lucky to have been given this experience, and I think it will be invaluable to my future.”

Before I leave I would just like to say thank you to Nathan. Same again tomorrow!

Building your mailing list using clever data capture techniques

Filed under: Email Marketing — Nathan @ 12:12

All too often, businesses take a somewhat old school approach to their data capture techniques. Again and again we see the ‘subscribe to our newsletter’ widget featured on each page throughout a website; but ask yourself this:

When was the last time you entered your email address into a ‘subscribe widget’?

Chances are you haven’t done so in a loooooong time!

5 Keys to Successful Email Marketing

Filed under: Email Marketing — Nathan @ 22:17

When it comes to email marketing (or any form of marketing in fact) there are always a ton of ‘don’t do this’ articles; which is fine, to a certain degree, but really, what you want and need to know is what you should be doing, not what you should be avoiding!

With that in mind, here are five top tips on what you should be doing when it comes to your email marketing.

Five Fab Tips and Tricks for Your Email Marketing

There’s no smoke and mirrors when it comes to a successful email marketing email strategy; it’s simply a case of learning and carrying out a set of practices and activities.

DO… Find Yourself a Suitable ESP

There are a lot of ESP’s (Email Service Providers) out there, and it’s crucial that you find the right one for your business and your marketing campaigns. A good ESP will provide both online and offline support, training tutorials, and updates on any software changes.

DO… Use an Opt In System

You can add email addresses to your mailing list in a number of ways, including data capture, manual entry and buying data. No matter how you add your contact’s details to your mailing list, be sure to provide your contact with opt-in options. You can use an opt-in checkbox on your forms, and you can send an opt-in email to your business card contacts. This builds trust in you and your business from day one.

DO… Take the Time to Segregate Your List

Not all of your marketing emails will be suitable for your entire audience, so it’s important that you take the time to segregate your mailing list into interest based groups. That way, you can send targeted emails, based on interests, to the right people. This will help to ensure that your email campaigns are more successful, more profitable and more useful to the end user.

DO… Monitor Your Email Campaigns

It’s crucial that you take the time to monitor your email campaigns. Not only will the results show you which emails were the most successful and help you create even more successful emails in the future, but it will also quickly flag up any problems with your email campaign. For example, if an email address in your mailing list is obsolete, it is essential that you remove this address from your list as soon as possible, to prevent a negative impact on your overall mailing reputation.

DO… Consider Mobile Users

Smartphones have made a massive impact in our day to day lives. More and more emails are being opened and read using mobile devices; so it is absolutely crucial that your email marketing templates look great no matter what device is being used to read them. As more and more people move their mail to mobile, it’s important to anticipate an ongoing increase in mobile device usage and incorporate mobile into your email strategy.
